Review of "The New Rules of Marketing and PR. How to use Social Media, Blogs, News Releases, Online VIdeo and Viral Marketing to Reach Buyers Directly.

In my Amazon.com browsing I came accross this book which I would highly recommend for anyone struggling to market their off line business online and who is overwhelmed by it all.
Yellow pages no longer work...When was the last time you looked anything up in the physical phone book?
Here is the brief review:
The New Rules of Marketing & PR portrays a comprehensive yet easy to understand view of the new online marketing. There are so many different options many small business owners don't know what works or where to start. Should I blog or do Podcasts? What is SEO? is Viral marketing something good even though the name doesn't sound good?

David tells how different online marketing options work, why they are important and why they work. In later "Action Plan" chapters, he shows us how to actually use the tools and implement programs. He uses case studies to illustrate the programs and the results obtained.

Public Relations can be managed online to ones benefit and is underused as a marketing tool.

The New Rules of Marketing & PR spell out the need to have good Content on corporate websites, not a flashy design.  You have to study your your target market very well so you can deliver the content they want when they need it.

This is a must read for any small business owner online or off line.

Social Media, blogs, online video and news releases are all used together to create the full marketing package.

The Shocking truth about what is in a McDonalds Chicken Nugget.

McDonalds Chicken Nuggets are a favorite food for many children. Parents who don’t like to cook might even kid themselves that McDonalds Chicken Nuggets may provide their kids with a dose of protein. (Protein is required by the body for growth, maintenance and repair of all cells.)

This morning while cleaning out my family van I came across some McDonalds Chicken Nuggets that must have been there for quite some time. I know this because I haven’t been to McDonalds in several weeks. Normally to find real chicken under a seat that had sat in a hot car for how many weeks, perhaps months would be a gross, stinky and horrid site. These nuggets however looked exactly as they did the day they were purchased. They didn’t even smell although admittedly I did not put one up to my nose to thoroughly check it.

My daughter, age seven, loves nuggets and I’ve always known they aren’t “good” for her but after finding these pristine, aged nuggets in my vehicle I started feeling alarmed that I was allowing her to eat them. So I immediately went online and looked up the ingredients and this is what I found from The Omnivore's Dilemma, A Natural History of Four Meals a nonfiction book by Michael Pollan published in 2006. Granted this information was from back in 2006, however I doubt the ingredients of the McDonalds chicken nugget have changed much since then.

These two paragraphs are taken directly from The Omnivore’s Dilemma:
“The ingredients listed in the flyer suggest a lot of thought goes into a nugget, that and a lot of corn. Of the thirty-eight ingredients it takes to make a McNugget, I counted thirteen that can be derived from corn: the corn-fed chicken itself; modified cornstarch (to bind the pulverized chicken meat); mono-, tri-, and diglycerides (emulsifiers, which keep the fats and water from separating); dextrose; lecithin (another emulsifier); chicken broth (to restore some of the flavor that processing leeches out); yellow corn flour and more modified cornstarch (for the batter); cornstarch (a filler); vegetable shortening; partially hydrogenated corn oil; and citric acid as a preservative. A couple of other plants take part in the nugget: There's some wheat in the batter, and on any given day the hydrogenated oil could come from soybeans, canola, or cotton rather than corn, depending on the market price and availability.
According to the handout, McNuggets also contain several completely synthetic ingredients, quasiedible substances that ultimately come not from a corn or soybean field but form a petroleum refinery or chemical plant. These chemicals are what make modern processed food possible, by keeping the organic materials in them from going bad or looking strange after months in the freezer or on the road. Listed first are the "leavening agents": sodium aluminum phosphate, mono-calcium phosphate, sodium acid pyrophosphate, and calcium lactate. These are antioxidants added to keep the various animal and vegetable fats involved in a nugget from turning rancid. Then there are "anti-foaming agents" like dimethylpolysiloxene, added to the cooking oil to keep the starches from binding to air molecules, so as to produce foam during the fry. The problem is evidently grave enough to warrant adding a toxic chemical to the food: According to the Handbook of Food Additives, dimethylpolysiloxene is a suspected carcinogen and an established mutagen, tumorigen, and reproductive effector; it's also flammable. But perhaps the most alarming ingredient in a Chicken McNugget is tertiary butylhydroquinone, or TBHQ, an antioxidant derived from petroleum that is either sprayed directly on the nugget or the inside of the box it comes in to "help preserve freshness." According to A Consumer's Dictionary of Food Additives, TBHQ is a form of butane (i.e. lighter fluid) the FDA allows processors to use sparingly in our food: It can comprise no more than 0.02 percent of the oil in a nugget. Which is probably just as well, considering that ingesting a single gram of TBHQ can cause "nausea, vomiting, ringing in the ears, delirium, a sense of suffocation, and collapse." Ingesting five grams of TBHQ can kill.”

After reading this I am convinced it is time to no longer allow her to eat McDonalds chicken nuggets. I encourage other mothers and fathers to limit how often you allow your children to eat them as well.!

America's Got Talent June 15th judges pass on Nina.

I always enjoy America’s got talent but tonight the judges got it wrong.
How could they say no to Nina the 10 yr old girl with the dancers who had great stage presence and great voice? She should be an obvious choice for the wild card pick.

How could they say yes to the weird, strange, yodel woman? She was eccentric and odd and had no talent. Then Sharon and Howie put through the not so magic magician at the end who ended up with his underwear on his head? He was terrible but he thought he had talent! At least Piers called that act right!

Alice Tan Ridley the subway singer for the past 20 yrs had an excellent voice and stands to become a star quickly. It was hard to believe she wasn’t singing at someplace fancier. She gave the impression though that she sang in the subway by choice. Evidently talent scouts don’t travel or search the subway for talent.

Looking forward to seeing tomorrow nights talent acts.

White iPhone 4 Stalkers Will Have To Wait Longer...But how long?

Try to pre-order the White iPhone 4 and you are out of luck right now. As usual there is a lot of hype around the new iphone becoming available. Right now At&T stores are only taking pre-orders for the black iphone 4. Although I checked the AT&T website just minutes ago and nothing happened when I clicked on the "pre-order now" button.

According to the Apple Store, the white iPhone 4 is “currently unavailable for pre-order or in-store pickup.” Launch date is June 24th but the store claims "At launch, we have the black models available for purchase and we will be adding the white models as quickly as we can.” So for those of you waiting, no further explination for the delay has been offered.

I don't own an iphone although my husband does and he likes his very much so I can only guess he would love the new one as well. I just wonder why they only come in two colors. Doesn't Apple know Women have been known to buy things merely because they like the color. Some would buy the new phone only because they liked the color and not care about any of the new things it might offer compared to the previous model.

Oil Spill rants and where are the oil spill jobs?

I'm taking a detour today because every time I see the news I am shocked at how few boats and people are in and around the coastlines cleaning up the oil. We know PB has the money to hire people. Why aren't they hiring people all along the coast to clean up the oil? In a few photos we see workers, but in many more photos we see no one except for a reporter and a handful of people looking on with sadness and helplessness at the situation.

Where are the boats that skim up the oil? What are BP and the President waiting for? Granted everyone was busy trying to figure out a way to stop the oil leaking, but why have they done so little to clean up the oil that has already leaked? Can they only think of one thing at a time? I would have thought while BP was thinking about how to stop the leak, they would have hired people to start clean up immediately. Granted it's an overwhelming task, but the longer they wait to do this on a massive scale the worse it all becomes. The more death to animals, sea creatures and birds the sadder this whole situation becomes.

I live on the East Coast of Florida and fortunately the oil has not appeared here to my knowledge. The economy is going to be hit on the West coast of Florida and in the Pan Handle which will ultimately affect all of Florida to some extent. Unemployment is already high enough here in Florida. The housing market is already in shambles. I can't even imagine how terribly angry and upset the residence in the states closer to the spill feel.

If nothing else BP should be hiring massive people from these areas to work on the clean up efforts. There should be no unemployment at least temporarily in LA.

People need to demand more from both BP and our President. People in other states, unaffected by the oil spill need to get involved. How do we make our voices heard?

Please feel free to post comments or air your anger toward the situation.

Internet Marketing Success for the downsized, unemployed and stay at home people.

Have you been downsized? Have you been home not working for some time now and wondered “Can I learn how to make money online?” Are you tired of working for someone else? You’ve no doubt heard some people are making a good living selling various things on the internet.

Everybody seems to be selling something on line, but are they really making money? Did they just buy the 90 second website builder and have a successful site up in just minutes? So many websites claim you can be up and running and earning an income in just a day or two following their fool proof plan.

Perhaps you have been sucked into one of these get rich quick programs, bought a couple e-books to learn how to do it, dipped your toe in the water, tried a few ideas and given up wondering what the hype is all about and why are there so many people out there making it sound so easy when clearly it's not.

Let’s put things in perspective for a moment. Yes there are lots of people making big money on the internet. There are also more people making no money on the internet even though they are diligently trying to figure out how to do it. So what is the truth? Well first one has to understand there are certain people in cyberspace trying to make a quick buck. Does that mean everyone is? Certainly not.
The truth is it takes diligent studying, learning and applying what you learn and always asking “how do I do this?” to truly learn internet marketing.

There are hundreds of blogs that offer a multitude of free answers to “how to” questions related to the internet. There is so much information for free and so many places to find answers it is surprising. How many Universities do you know of that give out lots of free information to learn from? None what so ever right? Well welcome to the internet my friend. It is a whole different world than the offline world.

Despite all the free information there is still a demand for information products that require payment. There are always people who happily pay for information. Why and who are they buying from? That is another interesting aspect of the internet. People are buying from internet marketers who offer lots of value and free information first. So the more they give away the more people buy from them.

Why is that? Well it is interesting how over the years the internet has evolved from a very impersonal place to a very friendly place. In the late 1980’s people were hiding behind the web pages anonymously.

Today and you have people uploading more pictures than most of us care to see (on Facebook etc), personal information is shared freely, people tweet what they are thinking or doing to complete “strangers” hoping these strangers will follow back. Bloggers write almost like they are writing a personal letter to you and after reading some of their blog posts you feel like you know them even though you are just sitting behind a computer reading, writing or listening and watching.

These days it’s all about building trust relationships and giving out free information before asking someone to buy. The members of the internet community are becoming like virtual friends. When was the last time you actually got together with the people you tweet or communicate to on Facebook? Are these people real friends or virtual friends? Are they nothing more than a modern day pen pal? Remember pen pals? Back when we were kids and actually wrote with writing instruments, not keyboards? When we actually had to learn to spell, not rely on spell check? Okay so those days are gone and it’s all for progress and evolution with new technologies.

I enjoy these times online. I think it is so easy to leverage yourself on line. You can communicate with so many people at once however it is getting to be an overload. Too many people communicating with too many others that don’t want to hear their message. My junk mail box is overloaded daily. I know for a fact that there is NO way I opted into so many lists! I can count the lists I have opted into on 2 hands, yet hundreds of unwanted emails come daily. Why are people getting away with so much spam?

Now back to building the trust relationship…Internet Marketers really get into cultivating this relationship with the end goal of making a sale. What is this breed of people? Where do they come from? Why are they spending all this time and effort for these sales and getting countless people to opt-in to their mailing list to get a free ebook or free report with information? The answer is simple … they do it because they are making a great amount of money!

Who are they? They are people with the vision and follow though to use this internet as a tool to earn their living. They are people who have had enough of the corporate world and have decided to take that daring step away from traditional “work”. Many of them have banged their head against the wall, trying to learn, vowed to throw their computer out the window many times and yet trudged forward learning more, trying different things until it literally “clicked”.

There are also a growing number of very young internet entrepreneurs. Some of them are making it big without even getting dirt on their hands! I don’t blame them for getting on the bandwagon. Traditional education at a University prepares you for a job that you can be downsized from. Your position might even be taken over by a computer as was one of my favorite past jobs.

If a 20 year old can figure out how to legally and legitimately make money on the internet doing something that people appreciate then what more security is there? Everyday more people in more countries get online. The online market place keeps growing, unlike the off line world where the market place seems to be shrinking. Even if Google, Yahoo or Bing would change everything about the way they rank websites I am quite sure an already successful 20 year old could figure it out.

Internet markets are very quick to respond to changing environments on line. They hear about something that just became hot and a few hours later they can have a website up selling that new hottest item if they so choose. Can an unseasoned person do it? No not off the bat, but don’t you think this internet arena is something you might want to look into? It will be here for the rest of our life and beyond. By learning how to do things online you open yourself up to more options for income.

During this past economic down turn people are snatching up all the education about the internet market that they can. There is no recession on the sale of internet marketing training courses!

Lady Gaga on Larry King Live June 1, 2010

Lady Gaga was on Larry King Live last night. She has become such an influential person through her music. Anyone who has ever listened to the radio in the past few years has heard her popular music.

It is so refreshing to see someone who was unpopular, teased and belittled as a child embrace her individuality and shine as the popular musician she is today. She said she felt like a freak as a child (not fitting in with the crowd was the reason I gathered from her conversation). Not conforming to the crowd is exactly what makes her stand out in her musical performances. From her outrageous costumes to her makeup she is just an individual all the way, blazing her own path.

When asked what she would be doing if she wasn't doing show business she replied "I would be dead if not in show business". In her own words she wanted to be in show business while she was still in her mothers womb.

She seems to have a fascination with death which is a frequently reoccurring theme in her music videos. As a parent it is hard to embrace her seeming intentions to poison people in her music videos. From her interview she claimed to hate violence, negativity and hatred so I am confused why she would depict poisoning in her videos (to me that is an act of violence). I was surprised to see the outfit she wore on the interview with Larry King live was conservative yet stylish. I was expecting something more outrageous.

Lady Gaga admitted she was asked to open for Michael Jackson's comeback tour. In her own words, "Michaels death was devastating for me". Some of her icons include Davie Bowie, Princess Diana, and she refers to Madonna as being a wonderful friend.

Lady Gaga (age 24) opened up that she was tested for Lupus and her results came back "borderline positive", however she shows no symptoms of the disease currently.

Lupus is an autoimmune disease. This means there is a problem with the body's normal immune system response. Normally, the immune system helps protect the body from harmful substances. But in patients with an autoimmune disease, the immune system cannot tell the difference between harmful substances and healthy ones. The result is an overactive immune response that attacks otherwise healthy cells and tissue. This leads to long-term (chronic) inflammation.

Lady Gaga admits she is spiritual, she prays, she believes in Jesus and God but has some confusions about religion. (mostly it seemed by the way people interpret and act about their religion). She is openly bisexual yet claims right now her only relationship of love is with her fans.

Lady Gaga sees herself as a champion of all the freaks and misfits led by her sense of nonconformity with what people expect. She enjoys pushing boundaries and will "have to think of more ways to annoy and shock people", in her quest to teach fans and people to love and embrace who they are. Her sense of style comes from a rejection of peoples views about women and brings her a sense of joy.

Her new music video Alejandro is expected out in the next few days. Her exclusive preview on Larry King Live showed a clip from the video. It portrays soldiers and seems to touch on the "don't ask don't tell" theme related to gays in the military, which she is opposed to. She states "No one should have to hide who they are."

In conclusion she stated how grateful she was to her fans. She describes her shows as a "celebration of shame", she hopes to be considered an icon when she is dead.
I would say like her or not, she already is an icon.

Lady Gaga we wish her continued success and hope she remains healthy so that she can continue to teach the world how to love themselves!
